The Way I used to be by Amber Smith
5 out of 5 stars
The way I used to be was a very hard book for me to read, because I completely understand how the character felt in those moments.
“Eden was always good at being good. Starting high school didn’t change who she was. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes.”
The Way I used to Be is about the aftermath of sexual assault. Eden was a geeky goody two shoes who was in band and was all innocent. Until one night when Eden’s brothers friend rapes her. Her whole world turns upside down. The book is told in four parts freshman year, sophomore year, junior year and senior year. Each year Eden turns into someone different and whole world changes. Eden becomes the school slut and smokes and drinks that night really impacted her life. She can’t figure out why she cannot tell anyone she feels like a coward and the drinking and having sex takes her mind of the horrible night in her bedroom.
Throughout the transformations in high school at the end of senior year she doesn’t care of her consequences and gives her body to whomever.
❝I've been with about fifteen guys now.❞
The book was beautifully written. I cried and it is definitely a page turner. Amber I feel really captivated Eden’s aftermath of what happened to her well. Not going into details of my personal story it is very difficult to talk to someone close or family member about something like that because you feel like they won’t believe you. I know people say why just say something, until that person know what you’ve been through it it not at all easy. Eden to me was definitely a bit out there for me as a character again I know she is fictional and people go through traumas differently, overall I am glad everything works out in the end. I loved the book and recommend the book. I enjoyed it and cannot wait to read more of Amber Smith.
